Obituary of Sandy Bishop

Jennie Alexandra “Sandy” Bishop (April 12,1928 - January 17, 2024)

Sandy was born on April 12, 1928 to the late Jennie (Tamplin) and Alexander Robert Stirling of Greenwich, NS. She leaves behind her husband of 72 years, Avard Newcombe Bishop.

From her immediate family she is survived by her younger sister Lilla “Maryann” (Clinton)

Cogswell. She was predeceased by her brothers James “J.D.” (Freda), Robert (Faye and Mary Glen), Harold (Sarah “Marie”), Thomas “David” (Barbara) and Albert “Ralph” (Kathleen “Kay”) Stirling and by her brother-in-law Stewart (Connie) Bishop. She is survived by her brother-in-law Garth Bishop and his wife Madeline, her sisters-in-law Kay Stirling and Connie Bishop.

She is survived by her children, Andrew (Beth Patillo), Stirling (Marnie), Randall (Sandra),

Jennie (Gary) Bustin and Lilla (David) Hall. Her grandchildren, Patricia (Josh Oulton), Carolyn

(Bill) Cameron, Jillian (Dwaine Kinglocke), Alison (Darrel Ingram) Lamb, David (Machaela) Lamb, Haley, Alexandra (Amrit Richardson), Elizabeth (Ira Henderson), Alasdair (Stephanie Clark), Victoria, John (Wendy Fraser) Bustin, Ian (Sarah Padovani) Bustin, Katharine Hall, Timothy (Michelle Glab) Hall and Dorothy (Nate Howlett) Hall.

Her great-grandchildren Izaak, Lily and Frank Oulton; MacKenzie, Sarah, Emma, Mary and Kate Cameron; Elsie, Ivy and Marley Grace Kinglocke; William and Adeline Ingram, Isla and Thomas Lamb, Ella and Evelyn Richardson; Madeline, Lucy and Simon Bishop; Ana, Henry, Arthur and Imogen Bustin; Margot Howlett.

Sandy grew up in Greenwich, attended school in Wolfville and graduated from Acadia in 1949. She placed a high value on education and took great pleasure attending her grandchildren’s university graduations. She was an astute business woman and managed the family farm with Avard. What she and Avard started as a small fruit and dairy farm became a thriving farm business known as Noggins Corner Farm.

Sandy enjoyed hosting gatherings with her family and friends at home or at the cottage.  She loved to swim and took great joy in swimming at Avonport beach, Acadia University pool, Aylesford Lake and The Bahamas. She was an avid genealogist and founding member of the Bishop Family Association. She was a member of the United Church of Canada and in her lifetime support St Andrew's United, Greenwich United and Orchard Valley United, New Minas.

We would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to her nieces Pam Bowers and Esther Cogswell. As well as home care workers Francesca Charlite, Wendy Spidle, the VON nurses, VON Personal care workers and the Palliative Care Team who made it possible for Sandy to remain in her home.

Cremation has taken place and a private interment will be at a later date. There will be a Celebration of Life service on Sunday, January 21, 2024 at 2 pm at Orchard Valley United Church, 130 Cornwallis Ave, New Minas, NS. Live- Streamed at https://youtube.com/live/BgIlahi9YnA?feature=share. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Orchard Valley United Church or the VON Annapolis Valley Branch
