Please share a memory of Emanuel to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with the deepest sorrow and heaviest of hearts we announce the loss of our dearly beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, Emanuel Ernest Laufer who passed away December 25, 2023, at the age of 86, with his wife by his side.
Left to treasure his memory are his wife Lexine; his children, Jeffrey (Susan) and Susan (Andrew); grandchildren, Jesse (Jenna), Angela (Landon), Lauren, and Evan (Alissa); great-grandchildren Hallie and Calvin; sister, Carla (Alfred); nieces and nephews, Nik, Diana, and Clara. He was predeceased by his first wife, Janice; parents, Srul and Irmgard; and brother, Edward (Peggy).
Emanuel was born on July 19, 1937 in Naples, Italy and was the first of three children in his family. He and his family moved to Halifax in 1939 where he grew up and went to school and attended Dalhousie University. Later while attending the University of Virginia for his PH.D., he met his wife, Janice whom he was devoted to until her passing in 2012. They lived in Ottawa until 1979 later settling in Halifax where Emanuel taught Metallurgical Engineering at the Technical University of Nova Scotia.
Emanuel liked learning languages, spoke German, French, dabbled in Russian and Cantonese. He became proficient in Gaelic. This went hand in hand with is love of the bagpipes which he practiced every day.
He became an avid sailor, learning and later teaching at the Canadian Power Squadron. Sailing became a passion. He relished the many celestial navigation sailings he led to Bermuda, Sable Island, Europe, as well as sailing most of the Caribbean on his beloved Ceol Mor.
Lexine joined Emanuel travelling to new places and revisiting some of his other treasured places and took up sailing and boat camping with him.
Emanuel had a special place in his heart for Cape Breton. He so much enjoyed being there where he loved playing his bagpipes outdoors. He will be greatly missed by Lexine's family and mutual friends.
A heart felt thank you to the Caregivers from Bayshore, the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON), Palliative Care, Drs. Tilley and Rayson.
