Obituary of Michael Joseph Marentette

Mike Marentette, aged 81, died suddenly on March 13, 2023 in Halifax . Mike was born and educated in Windsor, Ontario, and lived a full and interesting life.

After meeting his wife, Hilary, in Nigeria where they worked as volunteer teachers, Mike graduated with a Master’s degree in social work from UBC, then moved to Halifax where he had a varied career working in community development. He was especially proud of his time as first director of the Capt. Spry Community Centre in Spryfield, setting up an innovative multi-service model, which brought together various agencies under one roof. There he worked with groups and members to develop many innovative programs, including the Teen Health Centre, the Volunteer Doula Program and the Urban Garden Farm. He also pioneered team case management, bringing many agencies together to work collaboratively with the client to address their needs in a more sensitive and efficient approach.

Later Mike spent several years overseas designing restorative social programs in post war Bosnia, Croatia, Kosovo and Georgia. After his retirement he was an active member of the Capital Health Board. Mike loved woodworking and spent many hours in his workshop making furniture for friends and family, and benches for his neighbourhood trails. Wherever he lived, Mike was actively involved in his community, leaving behind a great legacy.

Mike was much loved by his family; wife, Hilary; children, Julian, and Meghan; and their spouses, Anne and Mark. He will be missed by many, including his remaining siblings, Janine, Marvin, and Gayle; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Mike was predeceased by his parents Alex and Hazel; and siblings Alan and Bev.
