Dear Hilary and family,
My sincere condolences for your loss. It’s been some years since I’ve seen you and Mike, but I have very fond memories from when I was a young mum, we lived close by, and would be invited up to visit you and Mike and your beautiful garden over a cup of tea/juice. Mike exuded warmth, friendliness, kindness, and a great sense of humour and love of life. No doubt a lovely person to have spent so many years with. It’s wonderful to read a bit here about his incredible career and the legacy he’s left the community - it’s very inspiring.
Sending hugs and best wishes,
Tara

My sympathies go out to Hilary and children at this sad time. I had the privilege of working close to Michael at the Community Service Office and the Captain Spry Commiunity Centre in the 80's and I saw first hand the positive and forward thinking initiatives he was responsible for . He was a bright beacon with a heart for the people . His ideas and integrity were truly an inspiration ! May you be comforted by all that he was and did for others. May he rest in peace . Kay Ann

Hilary, Julian and Anne, Meghan and Mark: I can only imagine how much you must miss Mike! I knew him only one summer - 1962 - when we both worked at Chateau Lake Louise! Mike was a Bellman; I was a Chambermaid. Most of the staff were university students from across Canada and we found wonderful friendships as we worked, hiked, and dreamed up all sorts of activities together. Mike and I became good friends, but we drifted apart after he returned to U of Windsor and I to Acadia. However, I remember him as a caring, kind, jovial young man. It doesn't surprise me that Mike became a social worker and community developer. He had the character that would suit such a career. Evidently, he did innovative and wonderful work helping many people!
I wish I had known that you have lived in HRM for many years! My late husband, Stan Stabler, and I moved to Wolfville in 2001 and had I known Mike and family were so close by, I would have contacted you. I'm sorry I missed that opportunity!
My very best wishes to all of you as you come to grips with your great loss. Having experienced similar losses, I empathize.

Hilary and family. We are thinking of you all as you deal with Mike's death. Rozanne and I enjoyed seeing you both at your home or at Pavia over the years. He had great pride in showing his projects in his workshop. It was that same exuberance that I saw when Mike set up the most innovative Multi Team Management System, able to get 40 or more agencies to work together with the ultimate goal of helping the lives of the most vulnerable individuals and families in Halifax, especially in the Spryfield area. He had a huge heart and an inate ability to work positively with everyone he came in contact with, smile always on his face, but with determination to break barriers and indeed was the reason for its success.

Hillary and family, I've had a flood of warm memories as I learned of Mike's passing, I am so sorry for your loss. Mike hired me for a project in Cumberland County (1976-'81) as part of the Social Services Commission with the Archdiocese of Halifax. My wife, Joan recounts a visit of Mike and the family to our home and picking blueberries at my in-laws in Springhill and a visit to your cottage site in Pictou area. Know that you are warmly in our thoughts and prayers.... blessings and peace, frank
