Dear Maddie and Family: I am so very sorry to hear of the sudden loss of Stephen. I have a very fond memory of being at camp when Gerry was alive and I was home for a visit. I was invited for a family BBQ and strawberry shortcake dessert after passing the afternoon swimming and sunning on the beach. I believe the boys were re-shingling the roof on the camp that day. A campfire afterwards on the beach and the boys bringing out their instruments to serenade us and watching the sky as the Pleiades Meteor Shower put on a wonderful display. A memory I treasure to this day. You are in my thoughts. With love and hugs...

I knew Stephen in high school but it was after that when he really touched my life. I had a tumultuous time in my teen years. After high school Stephen took my Dad's Industrial Mechanics course at vocational school. They hit it off!!! After Stephen finished the course my Dad always asked me about him, and vice versa. I was amazed that my Dad and this cool guy could bond at that level. It really made me re-think our father-son dynamic. Maybe Dad wasn't the problem???
I will never forget seeing him at my Dad's funeral. I really meant a lot to know he cared about my Dad that much.
My deepest sympathy to Stephen's entire family and his many friends.

Never thought I'd be saying rest in peace this early to this old friend taken way too young. We had a lot of great times together not only with the awesome bluegrass music and busking for the IWK but just hanging out and building something! There were times he was like the brother I never had. My deepest condolences to Stacey, Jessie and Shyloh and to John, Frank, Donna and Mattie and to all the other family members. RIP Steve, I'll play an old bluegrass tune for you, maybe you can play along with me up there.

Be mad, be sad, but, I hope you learn to cherish the time you all have had and let his love, words, and actions continue to be an influence in your lives. Perhaps, plant a big shade tree. My first memory of Steve was coming around the corner at school and seeing this "cool" dude sitting on the floor playing guitar ( or banjo...it was a long time ago). I thought..wow...way out of my cool league :) I got to know Steve better through years of various bands that we played in and got to know him even better when we moved to Hantsport and reconnected through our girls. Steve was like a second father to Kate and was always there for her whether it was a soccer issue (he was a great coach) or a boy chat. And boy, could he chat!! He was always patient, always kind and always caring We have always remembered his soccer philosophy of "when in doubt, kick it out" and have referred back to that saying many many times over the years and have applied it to many aspects of our lives. I spent many nights with the family and have made some great memories..ones that I will always cherish. He even got me to like blue grass.
Being with Stacey and Stephen ranks up there with some of my fondest memories. No matter your mood...no matter what was going on in life.,..you could go be with them and know that things would get better. Their love for each other and for their family is a gold standard that we all should emulate.
Stacey, Shy and Jesse there are no words that can come to me to express how we are are feeling. Nothing works.
"when you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight" - Khalil Gibran
We love you.

Even though I hadn't seen him for years, the memories of time spent with him and the rest of the family at Fall's Lake and elsewhere will never be forgotten. He was the only person I ever saw get my Mom to play guitar - with him on his banjo...I had never seen her play before that night. What a generous and kind soul he was, always happy and enjoying life. Unfortunate life's circumstance took me away from away from the area but I will forever remember Steve with a smile on my face and thank you for that my old friend! As I sit in heaven and watch you everyday,
I try to let you know with signs I never went away.
I hear you when you’re laughing, and watch you as you sleep.
I even place my arms around you to calm you as you weep.
I see you wish the days away, begging to have me home.
So I try to send you signs so you know you are not alone.
Don’t feel guilty that you have life that was denied to me.
Heaven is truly beautiful, just you wait and see.
So live your life, laugh again, enjoy yourself, be free.
Then I know with every breath you take
You’ll be taking one for me.

I have known Stephen my entire life, and though there has been numerous times he has made me smile or made me feel welcome. There is a story that I think truly represents the character of this amazing, kind man. When I was about 15 years old, some friends and I were acting out. We had been smoking weed and found some cans of spray paint. We had made our way to a baseball dugout where I thought I would brighten the space with some artwork. When the paint was still leaving the can, Stephen came around the corner and caught me red handed. I hadn’t realized the dugout I was in was right behind his house. Stephen didn’t get mad or upset, he didn’t yell, he didn’t even report me to my father. He instead talked to me, I remember him saying, “I was young at one time and I did stupid things too.” He explained to me how what I was doing was wrong and he spoke with such words that payed close attention. Even in a situation like this, he was patient, kind, and caring.

Newton and I were so saddened and shocked when we heard of Steve's passing and you have been in our thoughts constantly ever since. I hope you get comfort from all the great memories you shared and the outpouring of love and support that I'm sure you have received and will continue to receive. You are fortunate to have so many people in your lives who love you. I will share one memory from the days when you were living in a tent trailer in the yard while you were renovating your home. One cool fall evening I was in bed with my bedroom window open when I thought I heard water running in the back yard. I took a look and saw nothing so went back to bed. The next day I was talking to Steve and he commented that he hoped I didn't mind but he had come over to wash his hair with our garden hose the night before. He said he just couldn't bring himself to crawl into the tent with everyone until he'd washed his hair. That was so Steve! I'm most thankful for Steve's kindness towards Wesley. He was always included in your family activities and Steve was a very important person in his life. He will be missed.
