Obituary of James MacIntosh

MacIntosh, Reverend James Henry, BA, M. Div., LT-Col C.D., (Ret) Chaplain - 81, of Annapolis Royal, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 26, 2012 in the Annapolis Community Health Centre, Annapolis Royal. Born at home in Dundee, Cape Breton on September 23, 1930; he was one of the ten children born to James H. and Mary Belle (Ross). He attended the local one-room school with his mother as the teacher. After high school, in St. Peters; Jim enlisted in the army and was sent to Korea. Following his discharge he enrolled at Mount Allison University in Arts and Theology and met his wife Mary-Elizabeth (Atkinson). Jim attended Pine Hill Divinity Hall (class of 1958) and was ordained by the Maritime Conference of the United Church of Canada. After serving pastoral charges in Noel, and Alberton, PEI, Jim re-enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces as a chaplain and had eight postings in Canada and overseas retiring as a LT-Col, command chaplain of Training Systems. Nova Scotia called Jim to the Annapolis-Granville Pastoral Charge in 1983 where as minister and minister emeritus he served faith fully until his death. He was an active volunteer with the Boy Scouts, V.O.N., Canadian Cancer Society, Annapolis Community Health Centre Foundation, Royal Canadian Legion Port Royal Branch #21, Annapolis Royal Police Commission, Annapolis Heritage Society, and the Men's Club of Saint George and Saint Andrew United Church. Jim maintained a busy schedule until very recently. He had many years of great joy in his A-frame cottage on the - Arm of Gold쳌 and relaxing on his deck beside the fish pond with friends and family. Carpentry was Jim?¢s hobby and he donated many fine examples of his workmanship to charity auctions. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary, daughters Amy Moonshadow, Halifax; Heather (Bob) Rice, Lake La Rose; son Ross (Heather Mader), Mermaid, PEI; and was "Grampy Sir" to David Ross MacIntosh and Scott James Dale MacIntosh; sister Florence (Stewart) Bissett, Cole Harbour; twin sister Mary Isabel (Anthony Russo) Dundee and Conway, New Hampshire; brother-in-law Ken Ferguson; and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Jim was predeceased by brothers Ross, Bert, Ed, Archie, Gerry, Billy and sister Jane Ferguson. A celebration of Jim's life and work will take place on Thursday, August 30 at 2:00 p.m. in the Saint George and Saint Andrew United Church, Annapolis Royal with Reverend Alfred Woodworth officiating; followed by a reception. Burial will take place at a later date in Black River United Church Cemetery, Cape Breton.
