Diane and family, I am so very sorry for your loss. I worked with Darren for many years at Digby Elementary School and had great respect for Darren's ability to connect with the students, to lead, and to think outside of the box and solve problems with creative, workable ideas. I hope you find comfort in knowing how many people he impacted, both young and old. Darren often spoke of his own children with great love. I hope you all feel that love still. Sending my deepest sympathies.

It’s a day like today where I get lost, I’m feeling down and I wish I could write to you. Losing my Dad, the person who understood me the most, is still surreal. But I couldn’t get far within the toughness of today, as I just saw my facebook memory of my status from 12 years ago that says “I’ve seen fire, and I’ve seen rain.” The song you sent me last year. And this time 12 years ago is when I moved back to CA for good. I wonder if you sent me the same song during that time too. You always showed your affection so cryptically, or subtly. I have so many moments like that, and it’s funny because my song to said “You will find me, in places we don’t understand” And seeing that memory really boosted me right now. Because of course I would find you, you’ll never be too far.
I’ll find you in my troubles
I’ll find you in tough parts
Telling me to trust my gut
And just follow my heart
I’ll find you in the crowd
I’ll find you in sports games
I’ll hear your whistle
I’ll hear you chant my name
I’ll find you in my witt
I’ll find you in my height
I’ll find you in country songs
And funky beats
And in those midnight snacks
That we notoriously love to eat
Some days are extra hard, some days I’m able to get through easier. But all I know is every moment is spent missing you. It’s really really hard, Dad. I love you always.
“What is grief if not love persevering”

I met Darren when he first came to DES. He brought new life, new ideas and energy to our school and was soon loved by students as well as staff. Darren’s best characteristic was his fairness. When you got called to the office( and I did) it wasn’t always to be reprimanded. It was his habit to have you come to the office to receive congratulations or good news. Darren loved his job and he loved the students. We were very lucky to have him for as long as we did.
My favourite memories of Darren, though, are the times we spent out of school. We had a professional as well as a personal relationship. Darren was a friend and I will miss him and that beautiful smile.
Condolences to Diane and his family. I pray that Darren is in the hands of our Lord, safe for all eternity.

I met Darren in 1982, at Acadia, and we became fast friends there. He was a special and unique character, always able to see the humour in a situation, and we shared a lot of fun times. We stayed in touch after graduation, saw each other at least annually for many years and even when geographical distance later made that less possible, we connected by phone, keeping each other updated on our lives and discussing common interests like sports and indigenous issues. He had a lot of life experiences and made a positive difference in the lives of many people. We both moved from out of province back to Nova Scotia last year and, while I knew of his health challenges, I was looking forward to seeing him more often. In September, he was the "initiating mind" behind a weekend road adventure involving us and another friend, as if he wanted to ensure that we all got together at least once more, and we had a great time. I will miss him and send my sympathy to his family and other friends.

I first met Darren in 1982, and we have been friends since that time. I really admired his ability to find the positive and humorous side of things. He was a very good story teller, and he had a natural ability to make people laugh and smile. Darren went out of his way to keep in touch with me and my family, even when he was teaching in Northern Manitoba. We had many interesting conversations about Hockey, Football, Baseball, and Soccer. Darren was very talented, and I enjoyed listening to him as a hockey broadcaster, and watching him act in plays at Acadia. I feel very fortunate to have met Darren and to be his friend.
Our sincere condolences to Diane, Haley, Katelyn, Taylor, Tom and Lois, and to other family members, and close friends.

To Mr. Porter's family, my deepest sympathy for your loss. I met Mr. Porter when he was principal at DES and always found him to be kind and caring. My kids really liked him because they saw him as a friend not just the principal. He will be remembered fondly by the many children and parents who had the opportunity to know him. RIP Mr. Porter.
