Sending my deepest condolences to the Basaraba family from the Levy family.
When I worked at Home Hardware in Wolfville he was one of my favorite customers. He enjoyed sharing his flower bulbs with us. My husband enjoyed chatting with him. He always had such interesting stories to tell. Such real life historical stories.
Sending love and strength to the family during this difficult time.

Dr. Basaraba was my favourite professor during my time at Acadia between 1978-1981. I loved his many stories and he was a kind and generous person. I just saw the obituary today or I would certainly have attended the funeral. Condolences to the family.

I was a biology student at Acadia (class of 68) and a student of Dr Basaraba in microbiology and medical bacteriology. I became a physician and have never forgotten his kindness, his humility, and his encouragement to myself and many others.

Professor Basaraba, was a scholar, educator, gentleman and devoted, loving family man. He guided my undergraduate and M.Sc. thesis research which prepared me for my Ph.D. program (1979) at the University of Waterloo. Moreover, his philosophical knowledge and discussions, and querky humour, prepared me for life. My condolences to the family.

Judy and I were close neighbors of Joe and his family for over forty years and were fortunate enough to experience his kindness and generosity as we raised our four children. There are two types of people in the world, givers and takers. Joe was definitely a giver, always bringing flowers, seeds to plant and vegetables to our door and never expecting anything in return. He was a rare type of person and the world could do better with more like him.
Our condolences go out to Eunice, Natalie and Peter.

I was a microbiology student who so enjoyed his passion for teaching and for our learning! He made a tremendous impact in my understanding of microbiology, never to be forgotten. I regret not knowing that we lived so close and so wish I had visited him. He will forever be in my heart with his kindness and gentle soul. RIP Dr Basaraba

I had a unique and wonderful relationship with Dr. Basaraba. I've spent many a happy day with the Basarabas and I was lucky enough to experience, not only Dr. Basaraba's concern and conversations about his life and the current state of affairs, but I also got to experience his kindness and unique sense of humour.
I remember one time I came to the house after a piping gig and I was still in uniform. I left my glengarry, sporran, belt, and jacket in the dining room. When I came around the corner, he had kitted himself out in my gear and was standing there pretending to play the bagpipes! It was so funny and unexpected.
Dr. Basaraba will be missed by many but by me particularly. Rest easy Joe.

To the family of Dr. Basaraba,
A good and kind man has passed and I am sorry for your loss.
His microbiology class was one of my favourites - I enjoyed the material but it was mostly because of him. Dr. Basaraba taught me more than micro; by sharing bits of his own experiences, he taught about hope and perseverance. He was approachable and often made me laugh when he gave a view of my “serious”question that made me quickly realize I needed to relax.
May good memories help you through difficult days.

I had one encounter with him and it left a lasting impression
I was working in a store in Wolfville and he brought me some plants. One of which I had for many many years til someone accidentally left it out in the frost. I was devastated because it had meant so much to me and the memory of the kind quiet man that gifted it to me. ❤️

I attended Acadia from 1978-1982 in the BSc program. I did an undergraduate thesis in microbiology under the mentorship of Dr Basaraba. We spent countless hours in the lab looking at slides . He was always sharing his philosophy on life and I myself have shared many of those same principles in my day to day like throughout my career. A favourite saying of his that I have used many times when teaching someone something new was “ Always remember, a cow was once a calf. Be patient my son”… he’d say that with his glasses tipped down on his face. He himself was indeed very patient for those that shared his passions. I had the pleasure of sitting with him 1.5 years ago while he was in hospital and he was a sharp as a tack. Not happy with the world but happy with his life. He certainly influenced mine.
