Obituary of Brian Daryl Wasson
WASSON, BRIAN DARYL, 79. We deeply regret the passing of a wonderful husband, dad, grampy, brother, uncle, friend and neighbour on Friday, October 27, 2023. Brian was born in Minto, New Brunswick, and was the son of the late Eleanor and Waldo Wasson. He moved to Dartmouth when he was eight years old to live with G.B. and Francis Murphy. Brian grew up on Lake Banook and discovered a passion for water skiing at an early age.
Brian always enjoyed telling stories of his waterski days, playing pranks, joking around and meeting friendly strangers, where he would strike up a conversation whenever he would get the chance. With genuine interest, Brian would gladly learn about people and share their interesting stories with the rest of us. We could never figure out how he would learn so much about one person when he only had a few minutes to chat. Brian loved teasing, being around family and “discussing politics”. He was known for his homemade fries, ice cream and hard candy which was a recipe passed down from his father.
Brian looked forward to Wine Wednesdays as it was a great time to meet with neighbours, tell stories and have a laugh. He also enjoyed meeting old high school friends at the Owl’s Club and was a proud member of the Dinosaur Club on Molega Lake where he made lasting friendships. Brian enjoyed working in the jewellery business for over 50 years with a proud and well known maritime business, G.B. Murphy Jewellers, then travelled to Miramichi, N.B. with Robert’s Jewelery.
Five and a half years ago, Brian received a single lung transplant in Toronto. Thank you SO very much to his lung donor, as it allowed Brian to spend more time with family, inspire others and watch his grandchildren grow into wonderful teenagers and young adults. He appreciated this gift like no other and never took it for granted. He had a strong heart, most likely from all of the love he gave and received through the years. He showed it was possible to exceed all expectations, with a wonderful support system within the community, to prove that it is worth the effort to know and care for your neighbours.
Brian is survived by his loving and caring wife, Lorraine (nee Jakeman), married for 55 years. His three favourite children, Daryl, Wendy (Craig) and Karen, whom he would always brag about until he could rave about his grandchildren; Prima, James, Kevin, Cole, Reegan, Piper and Keaton. Brian spent many quality hours with his grandchildren showing them how to waterski, fish, cook marshmallows and love the cottage life.
Brian is survived by his brothers Robert (Thelma), David (Jane), Kevin and his sisters, Carolyn and Vicki (Eric) and his sister-in-laws, Cec and Diane. He is also survived by countless cousins and his nieces and nephews, whom he loved to tease throughout the years. Brian is predeceased by his brothers Walt, Rick and sister Gail whom we know are having a great time together in their afterlife.
Brian will be missed, but fondly remembered through so many stories. The family would like to give thanks to all of the nurses and doctors at the Dartmouth General Hospital ICU. There will not be a service, but a ‘Celebration of Life’ which will take place in July 2024. Donations can be made to the Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.
