Obituary of John Douglas Fillmore
Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with broken hearts, that we announce the passing of our father, John "Johnny" Fillmore, on Saturday, August 19, 2023, after a brief illness, surrounded by family.
John was born in Head of St. Margarets Bay on August 26, 1958. He was the third oldest of nine children to the late Betty and Douglas Fillmore. Growing up, John was quite the prankster to his siblings. He loved sharing his wisdom with his siblings, younger and older, and you can be sure, there was always a story to go along with it.
Johnny wore many titles over the years with the two most important being Dad and Grampy. He was so proud of his two sons and their accomplishments in life. Becoming a Grampy 10 years ago, you could never find Johnny without a smile when Zach and Addi were around.
Early in Dad's career, he was a licensed automotive mechanic working in Alberta. After moving back home, he volunteered with the Hubbards Fire Department and later moved on to become the Deputy Fire Chief. Dad's last employment was as a Civilian Fire Fighter with the Department of National Defence.
Dad loved everything to do with the ocean and was the happiest while on the water. He was always on board for a fishing trip with Brad, Troy, and Zach or to just go for a cruise and maybe catch some mackerel on the way. Dad loved scuba diving and was always up for any kind of ocean adventure. He loved telling stories - especially to the grandchildren who listened to every word. He was always the man you would want to call if you had any car or boat troubles.
Dad will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by his sons, Brad (Samantha) and Troy (Ashley). Grampy also leaves behind his two grandchildren whom he adored, Zachary and Addison. Dad will also be greatly missed by his siblings, Carol, Halifax; Ina, Hubbards; Murray, East Dalhousie; Betty Jean, Beaumont, Alberta; Terry (Claudette), Stoney Plain, Alberta; Heather, Wolfville; Linda, (Greg), Bedford; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Dad was predeceased by his parents, Douglas and Betty Fillmore; brothers, Perry and Doug Jr.; and nephew, Mark.
“Dad, we're so thankful for all the memories we shared together. We only wish you were here to make more. Love you forever.”
Cremation has taken place. A private Celebration of Johnny’s Life will be held at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home, 34 Coldbrook Village Park Dr., Coldbrook, NS, B4R 1B9 (902-679-2822).
