Obituary of Lola May Heard
Lola May Heard, (nee Logan), 93, passed away on June 12, 2023, in the Halifax Infirmary. The daughter of Ralph E. and Myrtle C. Logan (Wilson), she was born in Cooks Brook, Nova Scotia on May 3, 1930. She grew up in Dutch Settlement, the eldest of five children. She relocated to Dartmouth after Grade 11, boarding with an aunt, and worked at Woolworths on Barrington Street in Halifax. Marrying in 1950, she moved to Manitoba where her son was born. She was widowed in 1952 and moved back to Dartmouth, where her daughter was born a few months later. In 1958 she lost her son in a tragic accident. She eventually went to work at Jacobsons on Portland Street in Dartmouth, and from there, to a job at Dartmouth City Hall until she remarried in 1962 and became a homemaker. She was an active and faithful member of Woodlawn United Church, and of the UCW – Rebecca Unit. She was widowed for a second time in 1994. Her last several years were spent living with dementia, first at Parkland on the Lakes, and then at Laurel’s Lake Residences in Upper Tantallon.
Lola is survived by daughter, Marilyn Burford (Pittman); grandchildren, Jennifer Smith (Adam), Greg Burford (Rachel); and great-grandchildren, Gavin and Elsie Smith, and Duncan; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by first husband, John M. Pittman; second husband, George O. Heard; son, Donald John Pittman; sisters, June Lapointe, Avis Templeton; brother, Ralph and brother Cecil in infancy. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
A celebration of her life will take place at Woodlawn United Church, 54 Woodlawn Road, Dartmouth on Friday, June 23, 2023, at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow in the Church Hall, followed by interment of her ashes at the Gays River United Church Cemetery in Gays River, NS. beside George. Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Autism Nova Scotia, Canadian Cancer Society or charity of choice.
