I wish we had the opportunity to spend more time together, but I am so, SO thankful for all of the time we did get to spend together. You were such an interesting, intelligent & spectacular human being. Thank you for sharing your time with us, and for raising the man who raised me. I love you forever, and ever Grampy.

I'll always remember Doug contacting us when Bill Fisher and I were on Weekend Mornings. I supported him 100 percent for sticking to Tuft's Cove for his address.

Doug was a regular sight in our neighbourhood of Tufts Cove. I canvassed for the Cancer Society for over 20 years & Doug always invited me in & made a donation. Sad to hear of his passing but impressed by his amazing life & entertaining obituary. My prayers & condolences to his family. May he rest in peace. -Denise Messervey

I remember you took Tara, Sean, and I to Crane Lake (Little Lake) trout fishing when we were just kids.
We caught nothing and got eaten by blackflies. But as they say, “it’s not the destination, but the journey getting there”.
Years later I managed to get a few Brook Trout for your breakfast. Strange I thought anyone would want a trout for breakfast, strange indeed. I was tickled by your enthusiasm.
Your simple acts of kindness and appreciation for the smaller things in life have left an everlasting impression on me.
Thank You Doug….May Your Flower Garden Forever Bloom.

Our sincere condolences to Uncle Doug's Family. He truly was one of a kind. I will always remember his whit, wonderful sense of humour but mostly for his love for Mary & his family. I have quite a few fond memories of Uncle Doug and how he loved to tease and share stories with us. One memory in particular still makes me giggle to this day. My brother Dana & I were visiting Nan, Granddad & Uncle Doug at Parkstone Rd. We would have been about 8 & 6 at the time. Uncle Doug had this GIANT jar of pennies in his room & we were awed by how many were in this magical jar. He turned to Dana & said if he could carry it out of the room he could have it! Dana huffed & puffed & tried with all his might to lift it. I joined in at some point but with no luck. Our Dad Bernie was standing in the doorway, cheering us on...then the truth was revealed...the giant jar was GLUED to the floor so nobody could steal it! After much giggling & a hug for both of us, we were each handed a $1 for all our hard work. Rest in peace dear Uncle.

My condolences to all of Uncle Doug’s kids and families.
I spent a lot of my childhood at my Nan’s on Parkstone Road. I remember her tea biscuits, climbing the trees, her corned beef sandwiches and visiting with her, grandad and uncle Doug.
He would tease us and always join in on story telling standing in the doorway that led from the kitchen to the living room. He shared memories of my parents when they were young, us kids when we were born and his travels with his brother Graham, my Dad. They drove to Mexico from Dartmouth and to this day there are stories I’m sure they never told!!
It was great catching up with him on a few “Downey” reunions at Swiss Chalet over the years.
I will miss your annual Christmas card that you always signed “Unk”
You’re the last of the family from both sides of my mom and dad’s siblings. Rest In Peace

I regretfully never got to know you like I should have. I’d have a lot of questions if I had the courage to ask, but I appreciate what you built and did for the family.
I don’t think I’d be here if it wasn’t for the people you brought into this world.
Everyone believes something different, but I believe that people live on through other people and how they effected them. You raised Bubba like he was your own, Bubba raised me like I was his own, I’ll do what I can to pass that on and so on.
You may have passed but the things you did with your life have not and will not. The cycle is just beginning… Thanks for everything,
Rest peacefully alongside Mary, until we meet again.

Uncle Doug was indeed a character and until my family moved away when I was 16, we saw him regularly. I remember borrowing his sombrero and sarape to wear for Halloween. The fact that he had been to Mexico seemed so exciting to me. Upon my return to NS about 8 years ago I got to see him a few times and we often corresponded via letters and he would send me pictures of my parents, Beverley and Fred, along with pictures of himself with them. He also told me how he used to walk in downtown Halifax with granddad and they would push the twins in the carriage, my mom Beverley and her twin brother Bernie. He said twins were so rare at that time that everyone would stop to look and talk to them. Lynn Wertz, daughter of Beverley Downey and Fred Smeltzer. Condolences to the family
