Dear Lorraine,
I'm so sorry to learn of your Steve's passing and forgive me for being so late to get back to you and family . I must have missed the notice in the Herald .
Steve and I had something in common and that was politics since we were running mates , I guess you could say as Candidates for The National Party of Canada way back in 1993. I dropped into Acadia a number of years ago and we had a good catchup chat and didn't know he retired from there until he sent me an email .
Sincerely ,
Cliff Williams

Hi Lorraine,
I never knew Steve myself, but he comes alive in this tribute to him. There are no words to express what you and your family and the world have lost. However, in the brief time he was with us, he made a difference in the lives of those he taught and those that were enriched by his research.
With love and respect,
Letty

Lorraine and family:
I have only just heard about the passing of Steve and I want to send you my most heartfelt condolences. I met Steve when he was starting work at Dalhousie in the same lab that I was in. I was supposed to be showing him the ropes but it didn’t take long before I was learning so much more from him than he ever learned from me. I was in awe of his passion for biology and his creative approach to his work. He was brilliant and such an inspiration! Whenever I go to Kejimkujik, I think fondly of going out with Steve to sample Blanding’s turtles...that was a lot of fun, and such interesting work. He was also one of the greatest characters I ever had the pleasure to work with. Stories he shared with me still make me smile, and when I say things like “why is there always time to do it over but never time to do it right in the first place?” I hear his voice.
Interestingly, I heard about his passing because my daughter is studying biology and is a member of the Canadian Herpetological Society; she said they shared his obituary. His influence is spanning generations!
I have made a donation to the Steve Mockford Memorial Student Research Award so that even more students can benefit from his passion for herpetology.
With deepest sympathies,
Mary Dillon
(and Louis Robitaille)

My time with him was brief, but I dearly cherish every every moment I spent with Steve. Six years under his tutelage gave me a glimpse into the kind, caring, and compassionate man that he was…and I can honestly say I wouldn’t be where I am without his patient and steady guidance.
The sense of lose I feel since learning of his passing has been tangible, and I know that loss is shared by the many people that had the blessing of having Steve in their life, for brief or for long. My condolences and thoughts for all of you.
Thank you for everything Steve. I will miss you but will not say goodbye, for your gifts of wisdom and kindness will always keep you in my heart.

Steve was a professor of mine at Acadia between 2012-2016. He is one of the nicest and most interesting people I have ever met and I'm very saddened to hear of his passing.
He had a way of entralling people with whatever the topic of the day was. Whether he was going into details about genetic bottlenecks, the different triggers for leaves to change colours, or even ranting about winter tires, I always enjoyed his talks.
I owe part of who I am today to him with how he taught me inside and out of the classroom. One of the most impactful lessons being on confidence. He once told me a story where after a presentation a person asked him how he was so comfortable speaking to crowds to which he replied that in relality he wasn't and got nervous all the time.
Whenever I look at my Tattoo of Blandings Turtle or Conservation License Plate, I'll remember Steve. My condolences to all his family and friends, and thanks for everything Steve.

Dr Mockford was one of my professors when I attended Acadia from 2012-2016. I got to know him from his classes (conservation genetics/special topics in his genetics) as well as when I did research over the summer and spent most of my lunches chatting with him. I truly idolize him. He was such an incredible role model for his students. Integrity, humility, wit and a softness that made him so easy to talk to and befriend. I have such fond memories of discussing everything from biology to politics with him. To his family, I am so deeply sorry for your loss and I just want you to know how much Steve’s students love him and that he has had a such a positive and lasting impact on them.

No doubt I will be one of many former students of Dr. Mockford’s to reach out. He was my first prof at Acadia in intro biology, a large 100+ student class in the famous Huggins auditorium. He was also one of my last, in Topics of Genetics, where a small group of us would review papers together with Dr. Mockford in his office. This allowed me to get to know him more personally, which was a true pleasure of my four years at Acadia. My further academic curiosity in grad school is greatly attributed to Dr Mockford both at the beginning and end of my degree. I won’t forget the quality of man and teacher he was.

We met in Greenwood as photo techs but grew quickly to be family friends. We respected Steve as a great friend and mentor while in Greenwood. I left the military the same year as Steve, also to pursue further education. I followed Steve’s academic career as he pursued research on Blanding’s turtles, in Kej and beyond. I would see Blanding’s turtles occasionally in the 1000 Islands National Park and think of Steve and wonder what Steve was up to. I enjoyed his daily photos Steve posted on FB for all to enjoy.

I remember Steve as a teenager during his "adventurous" years. We dated for a while and he was the only boy my mother ever forbid me to see. I didn't listen of course. We laughed about that in later years. He and Lorraine left Victoria when they were very young but we kept in contact over the years and managed to get in visits when they were here or we were back there. It was always a fun time getting together with those two. A friend like Steve one never forgets. A love like his and Lorraine's was envied by many as they proved they were made for each other with their devotion and longevity.
A large personality and wonderful soul has been silenced and we will miss him dearly. It breaks my heart to think what his family is going through right now.

I was incredibly lucky to have Steve as my first biology professor at Acadia. Before beginning my first year of university, I was still having doubts of whether I wanted to instead transfer to physics at UNB. Steve's lectures were so philosophically and scientifically engaging that they instantly validated my decision to enroll in Acadia Biology. As my academic advisor, he encouraged me to keep pursuing my passion for genetics - calling me "the most obsessive gene-nut [he's] ever met" - which has led to my current position as a PhD student. His Conservation Genetics course that I took in third year remains one of my favourites. After he retired, he would frequently stop by my honours research lab and check up on me even though he had no obligation to do so. Steve's mentoring style and profound knowledge of biology and genetics have cemented him as one of the greatest educators at Acadia. It was wonderful to know him and I express my condolences to his family. The Blanding's turtle will forever be "everyone's favourite animal".

Dearest Lorraine, I felt I knew Steve through the wonderful stories that you told about him, when we were at Great Teachers together! I am thinking of you and your family, as you grieve and reflect on your loss. He was so kind, and I appreciated his knowledge when I was learning about the Blanding’s Turtle. The obituary is beautifully written, and I loved the comment about Steve’s adventurous youth!

My sincerest condolences for your loss and may his memory be eternal. I was not honoured with the opportunity to meet Steve in person but have been blessed with knowing his daughter Tiffany as a friend and colleague. His pursuit for collective good and touching lives shows in many ways through his children. May his soul rest in peace.

I have so many lovely memories of Steve. He was a very kind man. The fact that really touched me was his pictures every day during covid. They helped so much during a tough time for all. May he be in a better place. My heart is with Lorraine and all his family. ❤️
