Sorry to hear about your dad!
John and Pat were our neighbours and always had a basketball net fastened on the barn with balls inside that we were always allowed to play with. John would let us (the neighbours kids) play and beat the balls till dark whenever we wanted and quite often come out and play with us. He was always competitive but also he would try to help us get better, always the teacher. John taught us to curl, coached the schools curling team and would load us in his personal car for games and lessons.
Looking back, the noise, the yelling, the number of times he would move the cars out of the way for us to play in his yard, without saying anything, and I'm positive that he had to calm Pat down regularly so we could play.
It was many years later and after I had kids of my own and they started bringing kids to my place that I realized just how great he was.

So sorry for your family's loss. John was one of our favorite teachers back in the 1960's when he was new to the profession. His sincere interest in his pupils was evident. As a new teacher I had the privilege of teaching his daughter and witnessed the love he had for his family. May your many memories help you through this difficult time.

I wish to extend our condolences to John’s family and close friends.John was not one of my teachers at Cornwallis District High School in Canning as I finished school in 1963.However,I have heard from former students that he was an outstanding teacher. It reminds me of what they said about Jesus when he taught his followers and others while he was on earth. One of Jesus teachings is recorded at John chapter 5 verses 28 and 29 where he stated that those in the tomb or grave would be raised back to life again. He demonstrated this when he raised his friend and student Lazarus as recorded at John chapter 11.Lazarus was reunited with his family and friends here on earth.I am sure John will enjoy seeing his family and former students when Jesus brings him back to life from his grave or tomb during Christ’s reign as God’s king in the promised kingdom or government that we pray for as mentioned at Matthew chapter 6.Thinking of all who are grieving over the lost of this dear and respected man.Blair and Linda Jess

My deepest and most sincere condolences to Mr Newcombe's family! Just now I read that my neighbor, school teacher, life long educator, and friend passed away.
John's mom was my first teacher, John my high school teacher and Ian a great help to my mom. I can not remember anyone in my class of 30 who didn't enjoy being in Mr Newcombe's class, and as they say, we weren't all angles. In fact we looked fwd to Mr Newcombe's great discussions on how the real world functions politically and economically and even more so current events., He made learning fun!
After high school I was able to share some of my knowledge with John becoming his plumber. He always felt he could do the plumbing but Pat sometimes insisted it might be better to have 2 people. He and I would always chuckle when Pat would explain her reasons why. However it also gave us a chance to catch up, solve the worlds problems and once share a couple Cuban cigars. All fond memories.
R.I.P my dear friend, you have left the gift of knowledge, respect and kindness with many who will always thank and remember you.

John, Colin Chase, and I were sons of the 'Three Margarets", who were " forces to be reckoned with" in the Canard United Church, where we attended Sunday School together and enjoyed many church and family social gatherings as well. Later on, Leta and I were entertained by the telling of Teacher John Newcombe's stories when our children attended CDHS.John was one of the main reasons that I became a MLA . He was a real gentleman and will be missed, but his influence will live on. Sincere best wishes to Sandy, Ian, Scott,Leslie and families.

My condolences to the Family of Mr. John Newcombe. I remember him fondly, wearing his white lab coat, and always smiling, with a sense of humor. A great teacher, who taught me Geography and Economics. I remember if you told him you did not understand something he wouldcstart his response with " Now, Miss..Miss Gibson.. and tried to get you to come up with the answer on your own. Lol Funny man. In later years he lived next door to my mother who moved to Centreville. She spoke fondly of them. May God Bless Mr. Newcombe and Welcome him Home.

Dear Ian, Scott and Lesley and families,
We are sending our heartfelt condolences to you all.
We are fortunate to have wonderful memories of your Dad, having spirited conversations, always with a laugh and a twinkle in his eye, especially if he was talking politics with Arnold.
It was with great pleasure and appreciation that I was able to connect with him again as he came in the early morning to butter toast and greet the children at Glooscap - he also checked in on James!
He will be remembered.

Dear family- it was a privilege to have taught and socialized with John during my years at CDHS. I recall many occasions, usually over the lunch break, that politics and impromptu debates took place. Jim Taylor
was often part of the "game" while the rest of the staff cheered them on! John was very kind hearted and it was very evident that he was admired and appreciated by his students. May God bless.

My condolences to John's family. I knew John through curling in Kentville. He didn't particularly mind losing a curling game as that way he avoided buying the traditional bar refreshment for his position opponent on the winning team! If he was on the winning team, he always complained (in fun of course) about the cost of buying a bar refreshment for his opponent. He was certainly a wealth of knowledge on just about any Kings County & area subject. May he rest in peace.
