Dear Dianna
My deepest sympathy to you and your girls. There is no good time to loose a loved one but Christmas time is one of the worst.
The years that you, Dick and the girls were our neighbours are very special to me.
I wish I could say something to heal your pain but all I can do is send my thoughts and hugs from my family to yours.
Love, Hazel

To all of Richard’s family.
I was so sorry to read of his death. We were neighbours on Union Street all the years we were growing up. I have such fond memories of those times even when he was trying to teach Velma & me how to dance.

Dear Dianna and family,
Cathy and I send you our deepest condolences on the sudden passing of our dear friend, Dick. With you we mourn the loss of a revered husband, father, grandfather, whom we were privileged to know as neighbour, and a constant presence in our lives, especially at Wedgewood brunches, where Dick would hold his own, against the frequent taunts and barbs that would fly across the table! An intellectual, he would often say little, preferring to listen, until challenged, when his response might be a pithy comment that revealed his quiet, but incisive sense of humour. His beautiful obituary told us so much about him that we simply didn't know, and his passing leaves not only an empty chair at that table, but many questions we might have posed, but now remain unanswered. Most recently, I would meet Dick in the grocery store, where his frequent quip was, "Did she let you out again?," referring, of course, to Cathy! Dick, you left us too soon, and we will forever miss you. Rest in Peace, dear friend, in that great beyond.

Dear Dianna and family. My sincerest sympathy to you all -- this news came as a huge shock as I always thought Dick would be around forever -- he's been such a continuing force around the universities. I took a course from Dick in 1969, and ended up as his colleague at SMU. My thoughts are with you all at this difficult time.

With fondness I remember the good conversations with Dick during my many visits to Dick and Dianna’s warm and inviting home in Wedgewood. Our usual subjects were about science, academia, management and music. Dick had a way of putting problematic things in perspective and giving you hope that things would turn out all right in the end. And there was always room for laughs too, after all, that’s the best medicine. We last saw each other at Neptune Theatre, where I recall that Dick was thoroughly enjoying the show! Isn’t the music just fantastic? he said. There was lots of music and humour in it and he was having a brilliant summer evening out with Dianna and friends in Halifax. Now Dick is in the place where everything is music. He’s going to be missed here. My sincere condolences to Dianna, Christy, Allison and their families.

I always got great pleasure out of the nutcracker that was fashioned after your Dad. It is still in the neighbourhood :) I always thought of him when I drove by it on the way to Mom and Dad's. Sorry for your loss. He was always so nice to me whenever I saw him.

When we first moved to Halifax in February ‘77, we rented in Wedgewood, knowing no one. After a significant snowfall, Dick was the first to appear at the end of the driveway with his own shovel to help us out. Thus began a long friendship with the Chesleys, bonded by our daughters with similar names. Dick was someone I could talk to, confide in, and seek advice from, knowing that he was a true friend.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Dianna, Christy Allie and their families. Rest In Peace Dick.

My dearest friend my heart goes out to you and your family… I spent countless hours, years really in the Chesley house growing up and have fond memories on your Dad. Mostly I remember him as your soft place to fall when life got hard. He had endless patience with us teenagers. I think him now with a smile as he used to go on drives around the block to regain his patience (with his pipe I believe) a habit I believe I learned from him and use to this day. All my love… Gillian

I like to believe that being a father is more than biological—it’s about how you act, and how you treat someone. In that way, Dick was a true father to me, and I never felt like less than a full family member when I was with him. He always treated me with kindness and respect, with generosity and protectiveness. This is how a father treats a son, and this is how Dick treated me.
Dick wasn’t much of a hugger, but I made sure to give him one every now and then to let him know how I felt about him. I wish I could give him one more hug. I love you, and I will miss you, Dad.
