Obituary of Joseph Verling Carpenter

CARPENTER, Joseph Verling - 94, Granville Ferry, Annapolis Co., formerly of North Kingston, Kings Co., passed away peacefully, January 15, 2006, in Northhills Nursing Home. He was born in Edmonton, Alta., and grew up in Nanaimo, B.C., a son of the late Joseph Verling Edward Carpenter and Katharine Mary Cobbet. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force. Joseph came to Nova Scotia at the end of the Second World War where he met his wife of 48 years, the late Muriel Hattie (Allen) and after a brief time in Halifax, they decided to raise a family in Yarmouth and had two daughters, Katharine Mary and Cynthia Michelle. Joseph worked for Bowman's Distribution (Barns Group) as the District Manager for the Maritime Provinces and later became their Sales Representative so he could remain closer to his family. His success with Bowman's enabled Joseph and Muriel to travel to many foreign places, Jamaica, Hawaii, Bermuda, all across Canada and throughout the entire United States. Both Joseph and Muriel were keen travelers and often enjoyed taking their children to many of the same places Bowman's had sent them. In Joseph's retirement years, he and Muriel moved to Kingston, Kings Co., and spent the winters in their home in Florida. He was a member of Yarmouth North United Baptist Church and also supported the United Baptist Church in Kingston. Other than his wife and parents, Joseph was predeceased by his sister, Mary Katharine Wilkenson (Nanaimo, B.C). He is survived by his daughters, Katharine Mary Stephenson, British Columbia, and Cynthia Michelle Carpenter, Port Hawkesbury; grandchildren, Krystle Paige Sichky, Darik Joseph Sichky and Kattina Willow Stephenson; brother, Terence Edward Carpenter, Nanaimo, B.C., and the many friends he made on his road through life. Visitation will be held Friday, January 20, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Kingston United Baptist Church, Kingston. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 21, in Kingston United Baptist Church, Rev. Leon Langille officiating. Reception to follow. Interment will be held in Yarmouth Chegoggin Cemetery at a later date. Donations in memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or The Lodge That Gives (Halifax).
