BUSINESSMAN - RETIRED FIRE CHIEF

Lewis “Eugene” Elliott, age 83 of New Ross, passed away peacefully December 1, 2019 in the Evergreen Home for Special Care with his loving family by his side, after a courageous battle with cancer, Parkinson’s and dementia. Born in Windsor, he was the son of the late A. Lewis Elliott and Ellamae (MacAskill) Elliott.

Eugene loved his dogs, walks through the woods, fishing, touring various mills, week-ends at his cabin, trips to other countries and especially enjoyed family get togethers. A very hard worker, at age 13 he began helping his father in his sawmill and stave mill as well as helping to run the local movie theater. After graduating from high school, he enrolled at Survey School in Lawrencetown, becoming a surveyor and was employed by the Department of Highways for 10 years. Unable to resist making sawdust, he returned to milling, eventually forming L.E. Elliott Lumber. He worked alongside his father, Lewis and his son Peter.

Eugene had a huge heart and was very family and community minded. He was a member of Christ Anglican Church, participating in the vestry and as chairman of the cemetery committee for many years. At age 12, he began helping with the newly formed New Ross Volunteer Fire Department. For the next 50 years he worked diligently to progress the department. While a member, he held many positions and served on many committees. He was most proud of serving as chief for 23 years. Eugene was a founding member of Ross Farm Museum and a member of the New Ross Historical Society. He served as treasurer for the Bonny Lea Farm Parents Association.

Eugene will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 60 years, Marcelle (Keddy) Elliott, New Ross; their children Peter (Tena) Elliott, New Ross and Jan Elliott, Bonny Lea Farm, Chester; grandchildren Matthew, Bridgewater; Jared, New Ross; and Deanna, New Ross; sisters Marilyn (Bill) Skerry, Miramichi, NB; K. Elaine Powell, Bridgewater; and Linda (Roy) Voutier, Port-Aux Basque, NFLD; sister-in-laws Alberta Keddy, New Ross; Twilah Keddy, New Ross; Kaye Countway, Chester; Dorothy Keddy, Brockway, NB; many nephews, nieces, and cousins.

The family would like to express their gratitude to his family physician, Dr. Wadden, and to the doctors, nurses and staff at the Valley Regional Hospital for the care and attention Eugene received. Thank you to the New Ross Volunteer Fire Department, EHS, VON, Home Care, family, friends, and clergy.  To the wonderful staff at Evergreen Home for Special Care we would like to express our sincere gratitude for the exceptional care and assistance given to Eugene and our family.

No visitation per request of the family. Celebration of Eugene’s Life will take place Thursday, December 5, 2019 at 2:00 pm in the Christ Anglican Church, New Ross. Private interment in Christ Anglican Church Cemetery following the service. Friends and family are asked to go to the New Ross Fire Station for a reception following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the New Ross Volunteer Fire Department, Christ Anglican Church, New Ross or Bonny Lea Farm, Chester.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home New Ross Funeral Chapel, 4935 Hwy #12, New Ross, B0J 2M0 (902-689-2961).
