Obituary of Angus Jameson Hill

Angus J. Hill, 85 of Weymouth  passed away on March 2, 2019 in his home. He was known as Chink Hill and born the seventh child of 13 children, to his late parents Murray and Lucy (Brittain) Hill.

Born in Hilltown in 1933, Angus lived on Highway #340 on the Payson Road for the last 49 years.  He married, for 65 years, the love of his life Minnie Orlinda (Wright) Hill.  They went on to have a family consisting of seven sons.

Angus worked at various jobs including a mink ranch processing, Christmas tree harvesting, wood harvesting, construction of Weymouth Hydro, heavy equipment operator and truck driver, just to name a few.

Angus was known for his mechanical abilities.  Many people around the Weymouth area had Chink fix their lawn mowers, power saws, snowmobiles and various other gas-powered machines.  His son, Roger J. Hill won several snowmobile trophies, which can be attributed to Chink’s long hours and late nights getting the snowmobile running at its best.

Although Chink had a natural ability towards the combustion engine, his real passion was vehicles.  Angus was at his happiest when dealing on his next car or truck.  The number of vehicles Chink has owned over his life time is far too many to keep count. No one knew for sure what he would be driving when he returned home.

Chink grew up with his brothers in a small community with a lot of lakes, rivers and wood land.  They enjoyed countless hours at the Clearwater Lake as children, swimming with family and friends.  Angus later enjoyed hunting with his brothers, friends, wife and sons.  He was able to keep a gun looking and working at its best.  Chink was known as a good marksman and hunter.

A story-teller, he could captivate an audience with stories from times long passed or ghosts that won’t sleep.  Many people stopped by to visit and chat knowing they were welcome to do so.  It’s often been said you can’t stop for just a few minutes cause when you get talking to Chink the time passes so fast.  This conversation usually included a hot cup of tea and some delicious food, often prepared by his wife.  No one left the home of Chink hungry, unless it was their choice.

Over the years Chink’s kindness and generosity towards others was well known.  If you needed a helping hand, a tow, something fixed or help in anyway, he was pleased to be able to help his fellow man.  More often than not, he refused any payment for his work and was just happy to have helped someone.

Chink Hill allowed gospel meetings to be held on his land in Weaver Settlement.  From the trailer services held by Harold Smith in Chink’s yard, grew a congregation of Christians that formed the gospel hall.  The gospel hall is still active today and is where Chink attended church regularly with many family and friends.  Chink believed in God Almighty and was proud of his faith and only too willing to discuss it with anyone who wanted to know more. 

It was Chink’s belief, that to be absent from his body is to be with God.  We believe that Saturday, March 2nd, Angus Jameson Hill went home to be with God Almighty.  Praise be to God.

Angus is survived by his loving wife Minnie (Wright) Hill; sons Reginald (Candice), Gregory, Mark, Lucus and Orrin; siblings Gladys Amero, Sherman, Dixie Amero, Roseletta and Lorena; grandchildren Lee Simon, Shane, Layton, Orlinda, Jessie, Lance, Megan, Nichole Boudreau, Ryan MacKinnon and Christopher Meleanson; great-grandchildren Zoe, Hunter, Vernon, Hunter, Caleb and Bailey; special family friend Lisa and Clint Casey and their children.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sons Roger and Simon; siblings Henry, Charles, Eldon, Hector, Kennieth, Elvin and Hank.

As per Angus’s wishes and prearrangment, there will be no funeral service. Memorial donations may be made to the Valley Regional Patient Navigator or the Canadian Cancer Society.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home, Digby County Funeral Chapel, 367 Highway #303, Digby, B0V 1A0 (902-245-2444).
