Obituary of Charles Alexander Couper
Charles Alexander Couper of Bear River, died peacefully on December 6, 2018, in Digby at the age of 94.
He was a veteran of the Second World War. He received his training in fine art in Boston and Provincetown, Mass., including private study with Henry Hensche and Ernest L. Major. He subsequently taught in art schools in Massachusetts for more than 20 years. He also taught art classes during the summer in Bear River for eight summers. Charles built a house and studio in Bear River over some years and moved there permanently with his wife in 1987. He created and sold paintings all over the world, and received many awards for his work including: the Gloria Layton Memorial Award (Allied Artists of America); the Elizabeth Greenshield's Grant, Montreal; the Medal of Distinction, 11th Grande Prix, Cannes, France; Member of the International Biographical Society's "Men of Achievement", Cambridge, England; listed in "Who's Who in American Art"; two First Jury Awards (Cape Cod Art Association); First Jury Award and Award of Distinction (Pastel Society of Canada). The numerous public collections of his work include the American Museum Photo Archives, Smithsonian Museum, Washington, D.C. Charles was a driven artist, an avid organic gardener, had a passion for social justice, and a dry sense of humor.
He is survived by a sister; two daughters; two granddaughters; and two great-grandsons.
