GATES, Donald Clyde, 79 of Lawrencetown, N.S. passed away on the 12th of August 2016 at the Halifax Infirmary. He was born on May 28, 1937 in St. Catharine’s, Ontario to James Edward Gates and Annie Mae Baker but later in his childhood moved to Nova Scotia. Don completed his education in Lower West Jeddore, N.S. until he joined the Royal Canadian Military Reserves. Don had an adventurous spirit and actively enjoyed many aspects of life. He worked at various employment opportunities before being employed as a Correctional Officer at the Nova Scotia Correctional Facility in Sackville, N.S. from where he retired. Don loved animals and being in the outdoors observing wildlife and riding his motorcycle. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, and the Blue Knights Motorcycle Club where he was actively involved in various community based charity projects sponsored by the Legion and club. He was also an avid pool player and was inducted into the Metro Pool League’s Hall of Fame. Don is survived by his wife Bonnie Simpson Gates, two daughters - Deanna Pottie (Bernie) and Debbie Giles, and son Donald (Donnie) Gates Jr. (Debbie); two sisters - Mrs. Rosemarie Purdy (Ontario) and Mrs. Gladys (Gladdi) Moses of Dartmouth; three half sisters – Bobbie Savage (John Foulser), Irene Lowell (Rick), Lynda McGean (Tom), and two half brothers – Wayne Gates (Rita)and Jim Gates all of Ontario. He was predeceased by his parents, his former wife Doreen Murphy Gates, a stepson Scott Fraser, and two brothers-in–law (Richard Purdy and Wilbur Moses). He is blessed with a posterity of eight grandchildren, and five great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews, and not to miss mentioning his beloved pet cat “Louka.” who was his loyal companion during the days of his wheelchair confinement. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 20, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Chapel located at 44 Cumberland Drive, Cole Harbour, N.S. A family visitation will be available from 12:00 noon to 12:50 pm at the Chapel prior to the Memorial Service. A reception with light deserts will be held immediately after the service. Internment will be at the Lower West Jeddore Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Hope for Wildlife.
