Obituary of Arthur Bryant Watkins

Please share a memory of Arthur to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Arthur (Art) Bryant Watkins (MWO Ret'd) Art Watkins of Berwick, N.S. passed away peacefully on May 15, 2016, after a courageous battle with cancer, at the age of 84. A proud son of Newfoundland, he was one of five children of the late Arthur and Hilda Watkins of Deer Lake. He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years Joan (Miller) of Kingston and their six children: Nicole Campbell (Jamie); Tim (Brigitte); Catherine (Karl) Biermann of Halifax and Lieutenant Colonel William (Mylène) of Canning, Rick Pane of St. Catherine's, Ontario and Randy Pane of Australia. He was very proud of all of his nine grandchildren: Jim, Margaret, Olivia, Alex, Katie, Renee, Bridget, Erin and Tara. He is also survived by brother Kenneth of St. John's, Newfoundland, his sister-in-law Beverly Misner of Kingston as well as a niece and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters Ramona and Jeanette and brother Ronald. Art joined the Royal Canadian Air Force at an early age and proudly served in a 35 year career that was highlighted by postings to Germany, North Bay, Summerside and Greenwood. His love of flying remained throughout his life and led to a second career in commercial aviation with WardAir, Canadian Airlines, and subsequently in Paris with Air France. In 1990, Art and Joan retired back to Nova Scotia. He was an avid reader, sports fan and news hound. However, his favourite times were spent on the Berwick Heights golf course with buddies Barry, Duncan and Bud. Throughout his life, Art remained dedicated to helping others and gave generously of his time to Citizens on Patrol (COPs), Christ Church Berwick and Crime Stoppers Nova Scotia where he became known locally as the voice of Crime Stoppers because of his public service announcements. His support for the military also continued through VP International and the Royal Canadian Legion where, as a lifetime member, he periodically worked on several committees. His lifelong optimism drove his positive attitude that was admired by many. Joan and family would like to express their thanks to the Victoria Order of Nurses, staff at the Valley Regional Hospital, Palliative Care and Reverend Ruby Carter for their support and care during this journey. Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Lindsay Berwick Funeral Chapel, 192 Commercial Street Berwick (902-538-9900). A Celebration of Life will be held on May 27, 2016, at 2:00 pm at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #98 in Kingston, NS. Memorial donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Crime Stoppers Association or the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #98 Kingston.
