Obituary of Vernon Frederick Hill

Hill, Vernon Frederick (Fred) – Age 79 of Digby, Nova Scotia passed away June 14, 2014 at Digby General Hospital. Born July 31, 1934 he was the son of the late Vernon and Dorothy (Bright) Hill. Fred served in the Armed Forces for 26 ½ years and was active with the Navy League Cadets, supervising swimming and sailing. After retiring he kept busy in his hometown of Digby, representing community future organizations and serving as treasurer of the Betterment Association as well as the Black Education Association (BEA). For several years he coached the Digby High School girls and boys senior basketball teams, where he was elected into the Digby Sports Hall of Fame. In his spare time he enjoyed a bit of gardening, a few rounds of golf and camping. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 56 years, Gloria; sons, Fred (Cheryle), Daniel (Tracy) and Michael; daughters, Sandra (Merlin), Michele (Wayne) all of Dartmouth and Amanda (Anthony), Foxborough, Mass; nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; brother, Phillip, Vancouver; sisters, Alfreda, Vancouver and Betty-Lou, Saint John. Fred is predeceased by his infant son, Darrell; sisters, Alberta and Lavernia; and a brother Gary. In keeping with Fred’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no service by request.
