Obituary of Reginald George Moore

Moore, Dr. Reginald "Reg" George - Age 81 The family of the late Reginald George Moore announce his death on February 2, 2014 at Valley Regional Hospital, in the company of family members. Reg was born on March 16, 1932 in Brantford, Ontario, to Albert G. & Rose (Whittaker) Smith. He was the youngest of 6 children, and when his mother died 12 days later, he was adopted and raised by Ernest E. Moore & Ivy G.(Moore) Moore, also of Brantford. Growing up, he enjoyed singing in the church choir and at music festivals. After graduating in Geology from the University of Western Ontario in 1954, Reg went on to study at the University of Michigan, and later to study Theology at the Atlantic School of Theology and Acadia Divinity College and Episcopal Seminary of the South West in Austin, Texas. It was at the University of Michigan where he met Pat, his wife and life-long companion, and they moved to Wolfville Nova Scotia in 1960. Here, Reg took up a career as a Geology professor at Acadia University, a position he held until his retirement. Reg's passion for field work and for his students was a highlight of his career. He enjoyed geological endeavours during summer and sabbaticals. Throughout his lifetime Reg demonstrated an active passion for social justice, including a longtime membership in Amnesty International. He had a lifelong interest for Philosophy and languages and continued his studies, in retirement through courses at Acadia. The study of languages took place through immersion in Greece, Cuba, and Mexico. In his spare time, Reg was well known as a landscape gardener, restorer of the historic property Kent Lodge, collector of antiques, and generous host of many who came to enjoy the house and the garden. A highlight was achievement of a Provincial Historic Site Status for Kent Lodge. Reg was an active member of St John’s Anglican Church in the Parish of Horton as Warden, Diocesan committee member and member of the choir. A beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother and Uncle, Reg's humour, compassion, gentleness and warmth will be missed by so many. In addition to his parents, Reg was predeceased by brothers Albert & Robert Smith, sisters Ethel (Smith) Eastcott, Barbara (Smith) Stevens, Margie Smith and Elaine (Moore) McTaggart. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Patricia (Anderson), their children Mark (Ann) of Dawson City, Yukon, Jim (Jodie) of Rochester, England and Vanessa (Mike) McKillop of New Minas; grandchildren Jessica, Leah, Ronnie & Frank Moore and Devyn & Tanner McKillop, sister Jean (Smith) Collins of Brantford, several nephews, nieces and cousins. Arrangements are under the direction of Serenity Lindsay Annapolis Valley Funeral Home, Wolfville. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at St. John's Anglican Church in Wolfville from 6:00- 8:00 p.m. The Memorial Service will take place on Thursday, February 6, 2014 at St. John's Anglican Church at 2:00 p.m. Donations in his memory may be made to The Valley Hospice Foundation.
