Obituary of Gladys Lavinia Slauenwhite

Please share a memory of Gladys to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Slauenwhite, Gladys Lavinia , 97- passed away from complications due to a cold on December 15, 2013, at the Pine Grove Nursing Home in Fredericton, where she had lived since October 2012, in good health until a few days before her death. Born on October 10, 1916 in Halifax, Gladys was a daughter of Nina (Harpell) and Everett Weston. She grew up in a loving family of seven sisters and one brother. After leaving high school, Gladys worked as a domestic and then as a book keeper for J. D. McKenzie’s Creamery. There she met Douglas Slauenwhite, who delivered milk for the firm during the Second World War. They were married in 1944 and lived in Doug’s home community of Falkland Ridge, Nova Scotia, until 1988 when they moved to Wolfville. A kind and generous woman, with an infectious laugh, Gladys was a devoted Christian. A Bible always sat on the table beside her favorite easy chair. She was an excellent cook and skilled at crafts of various kinds. She prepared many fine meals for family and friends, and leaves behind scores of exquisitely crafted quilts as a lasting material legacy. Gladys is survived by her daughter Margaret Conrad, Fredericton, and two sisters, Veryl Weston and Margaret Butt, both living in Halifax. Douglas died in 1999 and Gladys will be buried beside him in the Falkland Ridge Baptist Cemetery. No funeral ceremony is planned, but relatives and friends are asked to gather with loved ones to remember the good times they shared with Gladys. Donations in Gladys’ memory may be made to the Pine Grove Nursing Home, 521 Woodstock Road, Fredericton, E3C 2J2, or to any charity that helps those in need. Online condolences may be made by visiting www.serenitylindsayfuneralhome.ca. Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Lindsay Funeral Home, Wolfville Chapel (568 Main St.) 542 – 4656.
