I was saddened to learn today of the death of Major Thexton. As a young teenager I lived next door to him and his wife Brenda. They were both a wonderful influence on me growing up. I used to help out with their yardwork, and they graciously fed me lunch on a number of occasions in return. I was always impressed by their kindness and their willingness to share their time with me.
Some years later and after I had joined the army reserves in Halifax I visited them once again. Knowing that Bill had served in the War, I proudly described to him stories as a young reservist not that long out of basic training. He smiled through my anecdotes, and then told me a few tales of his own from his experiences in Italy, which provided some (much needed at the time) perspective. He genuinely enjoyed hearing my stories (as meager as they were by comparison) and I never forgot that. He has always epitomized the Gentleman Officer to me.
I am proud to have known Major Thexton, and thankful for the time he shared with me. He was a good influence both as a young lad, and was as fine an example throughout my own military career as one could hope for.
Rest in peace, Sir.

My condolences to all of the Thexton family for your loss. I was given the opportunity to get to know Bill over a very short period of time and will always treasure the memories I have of him. He made me see things in a different light. He was a wonderful gentlemen with a very kind heart and soul that extended beyond himself to his entire family. May you all find some peace in knowing we share your sadness today and always.

My sincerest condolences to the Thexton family. I had the pleasure to work with Mr. Thexton at Acadia for many, many years as he was the Business Manager of Residences and Dining Halls and I was over in the Dean of Men's office in housing male students living in residence. He and I had our Monday morning ritual telephone call where he would proceed to read me all the damage reports from my residences which had occurred over the weekend, demanding to know what I planned to do about finding the culprits who had committed said offences. The good Major never seemed to like my plan of attack and on many occasion he simply politely hung up on me. Within minutes his secretary, Sandi, would ring me giggling that the Major was so annoyed with me that he had taken a walk around U-Hall to gain his composure. Despite our disagreements over broken windows and plugged toilets, we had so many good chats about things he & Barbara were up to, their birdwatching adventures and of course our beloved West Novies. He always appreciated our WNS Regimental Band's contribution when on parade and especially when the Regiment was Trooping the Colour. Not every Reserve Regiment had their own band but the West Novies did and he was very proud of the distinction.
Major, you certainly had a long, rewarding life and career. Thank you for your years of service in making this the great country we live in today. Today I salute you.

Brenda and Family, you are in my thoughts as I remember my good friend Bill. His vivid and clear memory of the events the wartime history of the West Nova Scotia Regiment was indeed remarkable. His contribution to his country and his Regiment, for which we are ever appreciative, will not be forgotten. We will remember him as being "always faithful". We were proud to have known such a fine gentleman.

So very, very, very sorry to hear about Major Thexton. His passing has created a void
for many of us that no one can fill. A friend, an advisor, a mentor, our unofficial Regimental historian... For those of us who were fortunate enough to sit and chat with him he will always be a hero for what he did for our country. I am so lucky to have heard his stories. We will remember him. My condolences to all of the Thexton family for your loss. I knew Bill through the weekly luncheons/bridge games I took my mother to. We would talk of Bill & Brenda's love of birds; they would give me insight into the ones I have visiting my feeder. Once they directed me to the commorants that fished from the telephones wires crossing the Gaspereau River, out Horton Landing way.
I liked Bill's dignity and warmth. I 'm sure he will be much missed by you all.
Peace be with you all.
