Denton, Dr. Leonard Robert, 81 of Truro, passed away, Tuesday, June 21, 2011 in the Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro. Born in Little River he was the son of the late Robert Irvine & Ivy May (Edwards) Denton. Len has been a teacher, University professor, social worker & physiologist He was a graduate of both Acadia & Dalhousie Universities & received his doctorate from the University of Alberta, Edmonton. Len was active in the Canadian Mental Health Association & was the recipient of the President??s Award, the Volunteer Service of the Year Award & the Doctor Hinks Award, recognizing his contribution in the field of mental health. He was the President of the Nova Scotia Provincial Mental Health Association & served on various committees in both provincial & national levels. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Truro. Len was a dedicated husband & father to his wife, Joyce & family. He & his nephew, Paul did extensive research on the genealogy of the ???Denton?? family. Surviving is his loving wife, Joyce; daughter, Karen (Glenn) Stratton, Truro; sons, Robert Leslie (Stephanie), Truro; Gregory Clifford, Guelph, Ont.; granddaughters, Chelsea Joy Surrette (Donny), Truro; Charlotte Sullivan (Greg), Truro; Margaret Gammon, Truro; grandsons, Jeremy Withrow, Edmonton, Alta; Michael Stratton (Amanda), Riversdale; Raymond Gammon, Truro; great grandchildren, Erin & Evan Sullivan & Zachary Gammon; nephews, Robert, Phillip, & Paul all of Truro. He was predeceased by daughter, Brenda Withrow, grandson, Scott Withrow; brother, Chipman. Cremation has taken place under the care & direction of the Annapolis Valley Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, Coldbrook, Kings Co. (902-679-2822). Visitation will take place in the Mattatall~Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young St, Truro (902-893-3177) from 2-4 & 7-9pm Sunday, June 26th. A Memorial service will be held 2:00 pm Monday in the First Baptist Church, Truro. Rev. John Tonks officiating. Interment will take place in Bible Hill Cemetery, Bible Hill. A reception following the church service will be held in the Fellowship Hall. Family flowers only, donations in memory of Leonard maybe made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to the Nova Scotia Mental Health Association.
