Foster, Gary Richard, 65 formerly of Shelburne passed away in the Evergreen Home for Special Care, Kentville on Monday, April 02, 2012. The younger son of G. Everett & Alyce (Hogan) Foster. He was born on April 18, 1946 at Upper Granville, Anna Co. & graduated from Bridgetown Regional High School, where he excelled in soccer, volleyball & basketball, while maintaining a high academic level, being awarded the Bruce Trophy as top school athlete, exemplifying the inscription, ???a sound mind in a sound body??. He also won a Margaret Reid entrance scholarship to Acadia University, followed by the RS Longley history scholarship at the end of his first year. He graduated from Acadia with a Bachelor of Arts degree, with a double major in history & economics. While there, he & his two cousins were part of the Acadia volleyball team that won the Atlantic University conference volleyball title. Following his graduation from Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of Law Degree, he set up a private law practice in Shelburne & later a real estate business. He acted as a judge of the Small Claims Court in Shelburne & as an electoral officer. His hobbies included golf, former Shelburne Club champion; politics; reading, particularly poetry; skilled carpentry; utilizing designs from another historical era; stained glass workmanship; as well as inlaid metal work. He is survived by the joys of his life, daughters, Rebecca, New Minas; Elizabeth, Wolfville and Callie Anne, Wolfville. His devoted friend & former wife, Penny Johnson, New Minas & his elder brother, Wayne, Truro. Following his cremation by the Annapolis Valley Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, Coldbrook. a graveside burial service will be 12:00pm Saturday, June 9th at the Riverside Cemetery, Bridgetown. Donations in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia 5954 Spring Garden Rd. Halifax, N.S. B3H 1Y7; or to a charity of your own choice. At his time we wish to thank the staff of Evergreen Home for the compassionate care that they gave to Gary during a difficult time in his life. Directions to Riverside Cemetery Going west to Bridgetown, take exit 20, turn right, proceed about 1 km towards town , across from the local funeral home, make a left turn down Chipman Ave. after the stop at streets' end proceed straight ahead to the cemetery. After service proceed back up Chipman Ave. turn left towards town, drive a short distance to Jeffrey St. turn right & legion building & parking lot will be there on the right.
