Obituary of Stephen Thorne

THORNE, Stephen Henry - 85, Port Royal passed away Sunday, April 29, 2012, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville with his family by his side. Born in Port Royal on the Thorne property where he and his family have lived since 1783, he was a son of the late Carey and Mary Anne (Chute) Thorne. Stephen served a 32-year career with Parks Canada as a Area Maintenance Supervisor for South West Nova retiring in 1990. After retiring Stephen?¢s love of wood work became not only a hobby but rather his life. Stephen had a love for his work and created beautiful pieces. Other woodworkers came from all over to share his knowledge of woodworking. Stephen was a member of the United Church of St George & St Andrew, Annapolis Royal where he was a past Elder, Usher and member of the United Church Men?¢s Club. Stephen was a past member of the Annapolis Royal Lions Club. He was past president of the Order of Good Cheer where he had the distinction of being the longest serving member. Stephen was active with the Stoney Beach Cemetery for over 60 years. Stephen is survived by his wife of 64 years, Noreine (DeWolfe); son David (Carol), Port Royal (the old homestead); Susan (Bill) Nelson, Bridgewater; sisters Dorothy Thorne, Annapolis Royal, Mary Kelley, Nictaux; grandchildren Michael Nelson, Stephen Thorne, Christine Thorne; five great grandchildren. There will be no visitation by request. A memorial service followed by a reception will be held 11:00 am Saturday, May 5, 2012, in the United Church of St George & St Andrew, Annapolis Royal with Rev. Robert McCarthy officiating. Private burial will be in the Stoney Beach Cemetery, Granville Beach. Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Stephen may be made to the United Church of St George & St Andrew; the Stoney Beach Cemetery or the Valley Regional Hospital Foundation.
