Obituary of Ray John Beck

Beck, Ray John â age 91 years of South Berwick, passed away peacefully at the Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Veteranâs Wing in Middleton, NS on February 18th, 2013. Born in Newburne, NS on June 9th, 1921; he was the son of the late Millie (Beck) Corkum. Ray enlisted in WWII on July 21st, 1942 and went to Sherbrooke, QC then on to Petawawa, ON for training. He left Halifax Harbour on Dec 24th, 1941. He was a gunner with the 3rd Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment and spent time in Belgium, Germany, France, Holland and the U.K. On leave he went to Edinburgh, Scotland where he met his wife Gladys and they were married on Oct 26th, 1945. He was very proud of being a D-Day boy in the capture of Juno Beach on June 6th, 1944. He was discharged from the army on April 6th, 1946. Left with fond and loving memories are his sons Raymond Beck of Bridgetown, NS and Peter Beck of South Berwick, NS; daughter Kathy Franey (Bruce) of Aylesford East, NS; brother Harold (Joan) Corkum of Hampden, Mass; brother in law Joe Grieve of Holmes Upon Spalding Moore, England; sister in law Ina Stobie of Edinburgh, Scotland; grandchildren Alicia of Halifax, Jennifer of Truro and Ryan at home; also by several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his wife of 61 years Gladys in 2007; brother Rex Corkum and sister in law Louise Corkum. Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 23rd, 2013 from 12-2pm from the Berwick Chapel with a legion service conducted by the Berwick Legion Ortona Branch #69 at 2pm. Funeral service will start immediately following with Rev. Dr. Judith Saunders officiating. Burial will take place in the Berwick Cemetery. In memory of Ray, donations made to the Canadian Diabetic Association or the Veterans Wing at the Soldiers Memorial Hospital would be greatly appreciated by his family.
