Obituary of G. Hillier
Please share a memory of G. to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
91, Wolfville, passed away Thursday, September 25, 2008, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Ewen and Rachel Hillier. He grew up in Glace Bay and attended the Glace Bay high school and went on to graduate from the Provincial Normal College with a diploma in Industrial Arts in 1942. Art taught school at Thompson High School in North Sydney for several years and served in the Canadian Army until the end of the Second World War. Post-war he attended the University of Pennsylvania where he received his B.Sc. in Education and subsequently attended Cornell University where he received his M. Sc. in Education with a major in Industrial Relations. Art returned to Canada and accepted a position with the Aluminum Company of Canada in Kitimat, B.C. Several years later he returned to Nova Scotia and worked as manager of Industrial Relations for the then Nova Scotia Light and Power, for 16 years. Art returned to Harvard University in 1965 and graduated from the school of Advanced Management and joined the faculty of Acadia University in Wolfville as a Professor in the School of Business, where he remained until his retirement. Art was a master woodworker, a hobby that served as a respite from his busy professional life. He fashioned many beautiful creations for his home and shared his expertise with many of his friends. When he worked in Halifax, Art built a magnificent Tancook Schooner in his back yard. His friends and colleagues watched his creation of his vessel from beginning to end with its eventual launch in the Northwest Arm, and enjoyed many leisure hours sailing in Halifax Harbour. Art is survived by his sisters, Ellen Morrison, Glace Bay, and Florence Lewis, Digby; several nieces and nephews in Nova Scotia and British Columbia. Besides his parents, Art was predeceased by his wife, Mari Louise (Holland). A graveside committal service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, September 29, in St. John's Anglican Church Cemetery, Main Street, Wolfville, with Rev. Cathy-Lee Cunningham-Ritcey officiating. A reception will follow in H.C. Lindsay Funeral Home, 568 Main St., Wolfville (902-542-2151). Donations in memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to a charity of choice.
