92 of New Minas, passed away Saturday March 7, 2009 at the Veteran's Memorial Hospital, Halifax, surrounded by his family. Born in Scott's Bay, he was the son of the late John and Irene (Benjamin) Barkhouse. He was wounded overseas while serving in the Second World War. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 6. He was a mechanic by trade and was employed with several local businesses including E.J. Twohig, Milnes garage and Irving Oil in St. John's NB and Halifax. He also ran his own repair shop on Cornwallis Ave. for many years. Harmon loved music and enjoyed singing, step-dancing and playing his mouth organ. His hobbies included, wood working, putting puzzles together and crossword puzzles. He loved to tell a good story or joke. He lived on his own until the age of 87, with the help of his family, V.O.N. and care givers. Special thanks to Carol, Deanna, Teri and Kathy. We appreciate your special care so much. Another special thank-you to the staff at Veteran's Memorial Hospital, Halifax. Dad always said, "they take really good care of me." Thank-you. Harmon is survived by his son, Gerald (Audrey) Brooklyn St., Kentville; daughters, Elizabeth (Peter) Poberezny, New Minas, Carolyn (Gary) Dunham, Lower Sackville, Donna (Gerry) Conohan, New Minas; 9 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; sisters, Laura Sheffield, Look Off, Bertha Steele, Berwick, Roxanne Davidson, New Minas. Besides his parents, Harmon was predeceased by his wife, Marjorie (Fraser); brothers, Bill, Joe & Sandy; sisters, Emily, Mary, Marjorie and Cora. He will be missed by all who knew him. There will be no visitation by the family's request. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday March 12 in H.C. Lindsay Funeral Home 5 Leverett Ave., Kentville (902-678-2151). Rev. Robert Billings officiating. Interment will take place in Pereau Cemetery. Family flowers only please. Donations in memory may be made to a charity of choice.
