Obituary of Garry Dean Messom
Garry Dean Messom, of Waterville, passed away peacefully on April 2, 2025, at his home on Lazy Brook Farm, surrounded by loved ones. A man of few words but deep conviction, he was well known across Nova Scotia for his friendly demeanour and workmanship, having completed work on homes and buildings throughout the province.
In his early years, Garry served with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, an experience that shaped his sense of responsibility and perseverance.
He was proud of his long journey in sobriety and helped countless others along the way, offering quiet support, strength, and guidance to those who needed it most. Whether with family, friends, or those he worked alongside, his impact was deeply felt.
A pioneer in exterior finishes and a constant innovator, he loved experimenting with new construction technologies and never stopped exploring new ideas—or new places. His love of travel took him far and wide, always curious to see how others lived, built, and shaped the world around them.
A handwritten note he carried with him read: “I am the captain of my ship and the master of my fate.”
The words echo the famous closing lines of Invictus by William Ernest Henley. The poem reflects Garry’s unwavering determination and his refusal to succumb to despair; it embodies his resilience and stands as a lasting symbol of his independent spirit. He will be remembered for his steady presence, sharp mind, and wry sense of humour.
Garry is survived by his partner and great love, Darlene Hill; his brothers, Eric and David; his children Corey (Johanna), Heather (Charlie), and Lloyd (Amanda); his grandchildren Aidan, Monica (Jacob), Emily, Willis, Kaitlyn, Ryan, Sarah, and Robert; and his great-grandson, William.
Garry was predeceased by his parents, Lottie and Lloyd Messom of Wolfville.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home, Coldbrook Village Park Drive, Coldbrook, NS (902) 679-2822.
