Obituary of Beta Bessie Jordan
Beta Bessie Jordan (Coldwell), 93 of Upper Gaspereau passed away Friday, February 21, 2025, in the Valley Regional Hospital, surrounded by family. Born in Avonport on December 7, 1931, Beta was the daughter of the late John C. and Alice (Lewis) Coldwell. She was a member of the Avonport Baptist Church, baptized by Rev. Frank Stone on December 2, 1945, in Gaspereau Baptist Church.
Education was important to Beta, who attended elementary school in Avonport, high school in Wolfville, and Grade 12 at the old KCA school in Kentville. Beta often made mention of working at Cleveland's grocery store in Wolfville before enrolling in Registered Laboratory Technician (Medical) training. Her RLT certification was earned at the old Halifax Infirmary, under the Sisters of Charity, while she also studied chemistry at the old Queen Elizabeth High School. After completing her post-secondary education, Beta was employed at Eastern Kings Memorial Hospital, with Dr. M.R. Elliott and Dr. Egar, in both laboratory and x-ray departments.
Despite being requested to continue work as a lab technician, after marriage to Joseph, Beta focused her many talents on farm life, supporting and caring for family. Beta's skills included cooking, baking, sewing, quilting, knitting, record-keeping, budgeting, playing the organ, operating a myriad of farm machinery, processing home-grown vegetables, pickles, and preserves, and even supplying gladiolas to a local farmers market. With her husband of more than 56 years, Beta and Joseph raised their four children.
Beta is survived by children, Ethel, Alan, Mary, Della Rhuland (Trevor); granddaughters Eden Jordan (Adam Parrish), Kerby Jordan, Taylor Rhuland, Brooke Rhuland (step); great-grandson August Parrish; sisters Annie-Laurie (Bird), Dorothy (Lowthers), Lolita (Crosby); and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Beta was predeceased by her husband, Joseph; brothers, William, Charles, John "David"; sister, Eudora (Patterson); brothers-in-law, St. Clair "Joe" Patterson, Avery Bird, Allen Lowthers, William Crosby; and sisters-in-law, Ferne (Nowlan), Jean (Nowlan), Gladys (Corcoran Webster) and all of Joseph's siblings and in-laws.
Beta's family wishes to thank Dr. Ross, VON, doctors and nurses at Valley Regional and EHS for their greatly appreciated care.
There will be no Visitation. Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2025 at 2:00pm, in the Avonport Baptist Church, officiated by Reverend Brian Keezer, assisted by Pastor Stephen Holland. Interment will take place in the Gaspereau Cemetery at a later date. Donations in memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Society or a charity of one's choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home, Coldbrook Village Park Drive Coldbrook, NS B4R 1B9.
