Obituary of Kathleen Mae Telfer
Kathleen (Kay) Telfer of Wolfville Nova Scotia
Kay Telfer, born Kathleen Mae Orde, passed away peacefully on January 24th, 2025. Kay was born in Inglisville Nova Scotia on October 11th, 1932, the eldest of three children of the late Kenneth and Edna (McGill) Orde.
Kay grew up in South Milford, attending school in Annapolis Royal. She was a proud Wolfville resident who met her husband, the late Wilbert Telfer, when she was 18. He had come to wire her parents’ home for electricity! Kay and Wilbert married in 1950 and enjoyed 60 precious years together, raising their son and daughters in Wolfville and enjoying many family trips and time at the family cottage, at Harmony Lake.
Kay will be remembered by so many as a soul with the kindest of hearts who fully embraced the life she enjoyed with dear friends and family, tending to her garden and enjoying birding, traveling and handicrafts. In her quiet time Kay was an avid reader with a keen love of music.
She also believed in the value of education and adored children. She attained her Diploma in Early Childhood Education from the Nova Scotia Teachers College in Truro and was the proud builder and owner of the West End Nursery school in Wolfville which she operated for many years. Her love of learning, traveling and gardening is carried on by her children and granddaughter with many treasured memories.
Kay cherished her family and many friends yet never forgot those less fortunate. She supported multiple charities in her lifetime and was an active member in her community and at the Wolfville Baptist Church. Friends have long admired Kay for her strength, strong will and for putting the needs of others first.
Her children specifically remember their Mother’s devotion to their care which extended to Kay’s exemplary needlework and design skills. From prom dresses to replica pop group outfits, she turned her hand to recreating the latest fashions, making bespoke patterns inspired by magazine features. She had the ability and enthusiasm to include specific details that Margo, Reid and Cynthia were excited to have. Kay poured time and love into the creation of many gorgeous outfits; a devotion her children still remember and appreciate so much.
Her family will deeply miss her very presence, the aromas of her home cooking, the best apple pies, and her loving wave from the kitchen window after each and every visit.
Kay is survived by her children Margo, Reid (Ha) and Cynthia (Akivah), beloved Granddaughter Brianna (father Paul), brothers Chester (Judy) and Curtis (Virginia), nieces and nephews. She will be missed by her family and many friends; comforted by treasured memories.
The family would like to thank the many people who helped care for Kay this past year, especially Brianna and Salma. A special thank you goes to Denis and Nancy MacKeigan of MacKeigan’s Guest Home who lovingly cared for and comforted Kay during her last days.
A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date. Donations in memory of Kay Telfer may be made to: Victorian Order of Nurses Canada (VON) or Heart & Stroke Foundation Canada. Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home, 34 Coldbrook Village Park Dr., Coldbrook, NS, B4R 1B9 (902-679-2822).
