Obituary of Dorothy Thomas
Please share a memory of Dorothy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Dorothy “Dot” Thomas, 76 of Sheffield Mills, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2022, in the Grandview Manor in Berwick. Dot was born August 12, 1945, the first of four girls to Wesley and Lucy Piccott, in Halifax.
After completing high school, she earned a secretarial certificate and worked briefly in retail until the birth of her first child, Deborah. At the age of eighteen, in 1963, she married the love of her life, Doug, and they remained happily married for fifty-seven years. In 1972, Doug and Dot moved to Sheffield Mills to embark on a new adventure of owning a general store. In addition to being known as an avid knitter, she was also sharp with the pencil when it came to keeping the books.
Dot enjoyed walking, reading, and spending time at the cottage on the weekends. Over the years, Dot nurtured many children while providing childcare in her home. This was her passion and being surrounded by children was her calling. This was evident, through her innumerable hours of volunteer work for the IWK where she knit countless numbers of hats, mittens, and sweater sets, that were sold at craft fairs in support of the children’s hospital.
She will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Douglas Thomas, Sheffield Mills; sons, Doug (Kelly) Thomas, Arlington; David (Lee-Anne) Thomas, Coldbrook; daughters, Darlene (Chris Ansems) Thomas, Granville Beach; Deborah “Deb” Thomas; grandchildren, Caitlin (Shane Fletcher) Thomas, Waterville; Chelsey (Alex Morton) Thomas, Coldbrook; Paige (Yohan Elie) Thomas, Arlington; Christian, Olivia, and Avery Thomas, all of Coldbrook; great- grandson, Makori Fletcher, Waterville; sisters, Vivian Laybolt, Yarmouth; Ruby Piccott, St. John; Sarah (Sally) Offord, Ontario; and many nieces and nephews.
The Thomas family would like to thank the staff at the Grandview Manor for the exceptional care Dot (Mom) received over the past few years.
Cremation has taken place and a service will be held on Wednesday, May 4, at 3:00 pm in the Serenity Funeral Home in Coldbrook. Memorial donations may be made to the Grandview Manor Build Fund or the Alzheimer’s Society. Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home, 34 Coldbrook Village Park Dr., Coldbrook, NS, B4R 1B9 (902-679-2822).
